 Education. The president elect will reform the nation’s public schools, as he has in Texas, which is one of two states that have made the greatest recent progress in education. He will close the achievement gap, set high standards, promote character education, and ensure school safety. States will be offered freedom from federal regulation, but will be held accountable for results. Performance will be measured annually, and parents will be empowered with information and choices. Agriculture the president elect supports recent efforts to reverse decades of supply control management and unleash U.S. farmers to plant in response to market demand, not government programs. But as the farm sector transitions toward market-driven production, the president elect believes the government should help farmers adapt to the challenges of the global marketplace as well as work to maintain competitive markets here in the United States. The Oval Office is where the President does the business of the country--signing bills and Executive Orders and meeting with staff, visitors, and guests. The Oval Office changes with each Administration, as each President brings personal mementos and favorite furniture or artwork, and each makes selections from the White House art collection. President Clinton chose to use the Resolute Desk, made from the timbers of the British ship, the HMS Resolute. Every President from President Hayes through President Dwight D. Eisenhower used the desk; it was first placed in the Oval Office in 1961 at the request of President John F. Kennedy. After being on exhibit for ten years at the Smithsonian Institution, the Resolute was put back into use by President Jimmy Carter. The Resolute was also used in the Oval Office by President Ronald Reagan and for a few months by President George Bush. On January 20, 1993, this historic desk was returned to the Oval Office once again, at the request of President Clinton. The White House is truly the people''s home. It stands as a monument to our ancestors and the democratic ideals upon which they modeled our nation. Inside it are precious gifts from the past that serve to remind us of our cultural heritage. If you do come to Washington, I hope that you will take time to visit in person. The White House is also the center of our nations government. The President and I have had the privilege of hosting many public events here, from the White House Conference on Early Childhood Development to formal State Dinners. As First Lady, I have met many wonderful people here at the White House.
